Fast start powers South to victory

- JAMES KITTO

A DAMAGING 4-1 win against fifth-placed Olympia at Warrior Park yesterday has brought South Hobart to within three points of first spot on the NPL ladder.

Two goals to striker Renato De Vecchi Marins inside the opening three minutes set up the convincing win for the reigning champion, as the visitors controlled play for the majority of the afternoon.

South’s third goal came in the 34th minute through Isaac Degetto and a three-goal halftime lead looked likely until Olympia found the back of the net through Warren Wadawu in the 44th.

It was a more even contest in the second half, as Olympia battled to close the margin with several courageous shots on goal. But it was South Hobart’s stern defence after the break that denied any second score for the home side.

South Hobart eventually iced the game in the 73rd minute when Connor Schmidt blasted a strike past Warriors goalkeeper Brett Johnson.

South Hobart coach Ken Morton praised his players’ effort in his side’s eighth win for the season.

“Overall, I’m really happy with our performance — we showed great character and got off to a super start,” Morton said.

“There was a focus throughout the game that we were looking to score goals to boost our goal difference and our position on the ladder. The goals didn’t always come how we wanted them to, but it was pleasing to create a number of chances. It’s always good to take a win away from home.”

South Hobart is now locked in a tight battle at the top of the NPL ladder with just three points separating the top four sides. Ladder: Devonport Strikers 29 points; Launceston City 29; Hobart Zebras 26; South Hobart 26; Olympia Warriors 16; Northern Rangers 10; Kingborough Lions 8; Clarence United 2.
