Jack’s wow moment ranks with the best

- WITH JAMES BRESNEHAN

HE might have dropped Mark of the Year and the $10,000 that goes with it against Adelaide at the MCG on Friday night, but a few seconds later Tasmanian Tiger Jack Riewoldt posted his entry in the AFL Goal of the Year.

The sequence in which Riewoldt soared for a screamer, failed to glove it but followed up with an almighty 50m snap and goal made jaws drop.

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale and Tigers president Peggy O’Neal both said wow and Twitter lit up with admirers. It was one of two goals kicked by Riewoldt from seven marks and 18 touches in Richmond’s domination of the Crows, the side winning by 47 points — one less than the score when the Tigers beat Adelaide in last year’s grand final.

The 15.13 (103) to 8.8 (56) win was Richmond’s 17th straight on its home ground, equalling the record set by Melbourne in the 1950s, and was Adelaide’s lowest score against the Tigers.

Tassie Tiger Toby Nankervis continued his stellar season with 16 touches, four intercept marks and 31 hitouts.

Hugh Greenwood (22 possessions and eight clearances) had a solid night for the Crows.

Geelong defender Jake Kolodjashnij (11 contested possessions, and seven onepercenters) was critical to the Cats’ win over Sydney. Kanga Ben Brown sank another four goals in North Melbourne’s win over Gold Coast and Lachie Weller racked up 25 possessions for the Suns. Jeremy Howe was terrific in the Pies’ win over Essendon and teammate Brody Mihocek had eight touches and three marks.

ALWAYS NEXT WEEK

OR could that be the week after for Carlton ruckman Andrew Phillips, depending on how tests on his hamstring go today.

The big man from Lauderdale tweaked his right hammy in the opening quarter of the Blues’ loss to Brisbane at the Gabba and did not return to the game. A Carlton spokesperson said yesterday it was a “high hamstring strain” and the club would know more once Phillips goes for scans.

In the same game, Lion Mitch Robinson had 12 disposals, three inside 50s and a goal, and for the Blues Liam Jones (six possessions, four marks) was under pressure all day in defence.

IN THE MIX

IF GOLD Coast is looking for fresh runners, Kade Kolodjashnij and Jesse Lonergan are ready to step up after being named the Suns’ best two players in their NEAFL game.
