Chargers coach in rethink

CHARGERS coach Dwain Davie is weighing up his future after his side failed to make the women’s SEABL finals.

The Chargers’ season ended on Friday at the hands of the Launceston Tornadoes to finish ninth with a 10-10 record.

Davie described the season as a failure but there were extenuating circumstances.

Imports Kathleen Scheer, Britt Smart and Klara Wischer all lost games through injury, or battled through matches less than fully fit.

“We set ourselves at the start of the season to contend for the championships. So, if you look at it that way, it is a failure of a season,” Davie said.

“But there were some positives out of the year.

“The level of adversity we had to face in terms of injuries and people being out of the line-up for different reasons really made things difficult.

“For us to stay together as a group and stay in the race for the finals until the very last game was an achievement.”

But with the imports sidelined, the locals did stand up, particularly Sharna Thompson, Kylie McCauley, Emma Waller and Alex Finlayson and, despite the injuries, Scheer, Smart and Wischer were all outstanding contributors to the program.

After three seasons in charge, Davie will take some time to decide if he will nominate for the top job again.

“I will need to sit down and work out what I’m doing,” he said. “I’ll let the dust settle for a couple of weeks and reflect on how the season has gone and the three seasons I’ve been here as coach and make an assessment on where I think I’m at before I talk to the club further and see what they want to do.”
