Water bragging rights up for grabs

- JAMES KITTO

TASMANIAN towns are set to vie for the title of best tasting tap water — as eight towns across the state remain on boil water alerts.

The Water Industry Operators Association of Australia event samples water from regional and metropolitan areas in Tasmania judged on colour, clarity, odour and mouth-feel.

The state heats will be held tomorrow at the Mowbray Racing Centre in Launceston, with the winning region invited to represent Tasmania in the national competition in September.

TasWater has boil water advice for eight regions across the state including Judbury, Bronte Park and Conara.

TasWater has encouraged residents in affected areas to cool boiled water for drinking, food preparation, cleaning teeth, washing uncooked foods and making ice.

TasWater chief executive Mike Brewster says the company is on track to remove the Public Health Alerts on water quality in the final regional towns across Tasmania that are still on alerts by the end of next month.

Water Industry Operators Association chief operations officer Craig Mathisen says the event highlights the high standard of water in Australia.

“The competition is a testament to the excellent quality of Australian water and to the diligence and commitment of the ... employees who deliver it to our communities,” he said.
