Smith seals Classic triumph

- STUART EATON

TASMANIA Golf Club’s Timothy Smith captured the open boys’ division of the Junior Golf Classic at Claremont Golf Club last Friday.

The Tasmanian boys’ team member carded a two-over-par round of 71 to secure the 18-years-and-under title.

Fellow club member Dylan Backhouse won the 18-years-and-under nett with a round of 68, two strokes in front of local member Kyedon Grueber on 71.

Tasmanian women’s team member and Royal Hobart junior Hallie Meaburn won the girls’ event with a round of 92.

Ulverstone Golf Club’s Tailah Mowat collected the nett prize with a round of 79, five strokes in front of Royal Hobart’s Mackenzie Thomas on 84. NEW South Wales’ Blake Windred fired a final-round six-under-par 65 to finish in a three-way tie for second at the Porter Cup in upstate New York at the weekend.

Windred breezed around the Niagara Falls Country Club course with a round that included six birdies and a solitary bogey on the 18th. Had it not been for the dropped shot on the last, outright second would have been his alone.

Queensland’s Shae-Wools Cobb and Charlie Dann had good weeks, both finishing in the top 10. Wools-Cobb, playing in the final group alongside eventual winner Thomas Walsh, couldn’t get anything going on the final day. AUSTRALIA’S Karl Vilips and Jediah Morgan advanced to the matchplay phase of the US Boys’ Junior Amateur Championship last week.

Both progressed after strong showings on the famous Lower Course at Baltusrol in New Jersey.

Vilips, from Victoria, was the best performed of the Aussies in the stroke rounds, with scores of 66 and 69, a sixunder-par total of 135. Vilips qualified for the matchplay rounds in third place and defeated Julian Perico from Peru one-up to progress to the round of 32.

However, Vilips’ dreams of winning the title were squashed by Thomas Ponder from Dothan, Alabama, 3 and 1.

Morgan succumbed to Jolo Timothy Magcalayo from the Philippines onedown in the round of 64.
