MINOR PARTY CANDIDATES HAVE THEIR SAY

- Joshua Boag (Liberal Democrat), did not respond to interview requests.

JARROD EDWARDS The Greens

“For the most part people who come up to me on the street can see I’m a genuinely sincere person who cares about the issues in the electorate not just the environmental issues, but also social issues.”

TOP ISSUES: “Sensible and sustainable balance for the environment”, increasing Newstart allowance and minimum wage, free tertiary education and healthcare, against corporate tax cuts.

HOW TO VOTE: 1. Edwards, 2. Garland, 3. Keay, 4. Gibbons, 5. Neal, 6. Whiteley, 7. Boag, 8. Strangio.

BRETT NEAL Shooters, Fishers and Farmers

“We’re going all right, we’re getting quite a few people ringing and asking about our policies. We’re only a new party who hasn’t been out that long. It would take a miracle for us to get across the line, but you have to be in there having a go.” TOP ISSUES: “It’s about a fair go and being able to access 4WD tracks and shooting and fishing and salmon fishing. We’re not about stopping anything, we’re about a sustainable future.”

HOW TO VOTE: No how to vote ticket but recommending Whiteley 6th, Keay 7th, Edwards 8th.

CRAIG GARLAND Independent

“I didn’t have a plan or anything. When Eric Abetz attacked me I thought how do I deal with this, but I got my side of the story out. The media has been good. I’ve had old farmers ringing me up from places like King Island, saying they’ve voted for the Liberals all their lives, but now they’re voting for me. People appreciate what I’m doing. I reckon I’ll determine the outcome.” TOP ISSUES: “The salmon farm issue is huge up here.” HOW TO VOTE: 1. Garland, 2. Neal, 3. Edwards, 4. Keay, 5. Boag, 6. Gibbons, 7. Strangio, 8: Whiteley.

BRUNO STRANGIO Australian People’s Party

“We all know that to win a House of Representatives seat is the most difficult to win. And you can’t win when you’re not getting $40 million a year in donations like the major parties. Labor or the Liberals will win, they have too much money and they’re free with their chequebooks.”

TOP ISSUES: “Tasmania has been left out for the last 100 years.” Federal funding to help unemployment.

HOW TO VOTE: 1. Strangio, 2. Gibbons, 3: Neal, 4. Garland, 5. Boag, 6. Edwards, 7. Keay, 8. Whiteley.

DONNA GIBBONS Independent

“I realise as an independent you need a team to hit the ground running. I’m learning lots. One thing I’m learning is that people don’t really understand preferential voting. Liberal or Labor are going to get in, so why would you give them your number one?”

TOP ISSUES: People are a bit fed up with politics and politicians.

HOW TO VOTE: No how to vote card. “Put the major parties down towards the end is all I say!”
