Mayor says benefits flow from improved town supply

-

BREAK O’Day Mayor Mick Tucker says the lifting of Scamander’s boil water alert represents a real opportunity for the town.

Cr Tucker says the availability of clean safe drinking water provides added confidence for business and the community to invest in tourism and other local industries. Scamander is one of Tasmania’s most popular beach- side holiday towns, and Cr Tucker says it is now up there with the best of the best.

“They can hold their head up now and say they have good drinking water,” he said.

While the need to boil drinking water had surprised visitors while the alert was in place, Cr Tucker says it’s now a thing of the past.

“Travelling around myself I’ve had occasion where you go to an idyllic place and can’t drink the water so it’s pretty sad, but we’ve got to move on,” Cr Tucker said.

He said he understood the inconvenience for businesses in providing boiled water for food preparation and drinking.

“People were trying to make a living and it was an extra cost and an extra burden that was put on them.”

From the start of the upgrade Cr Tucker says he had full confidence that TasWater would get the job done.

“The amount of community consultation and interaction with the council, keeping them informed was the most important part all along the way,” Cr Tucker said.

He admits at times the community didn’t share his enthusiasm.

“But in end they have appreciated the work which has been done to fix the issue and agree that it has been done well,” Cr Tucker said.
