It’s an atmosphere of change

The former four-peice now three-piece will unleash their new sound on Saturday with the launch of their new EP, Atmosphere.

Singer and guitarist Matthew Burn said becoming a three-piece meant the band has had to rethink their sound.

“We’re recording and writing differently,” he said.

“We’ve become more melodic, psychedelic, and we are using more dynamics.

“It will be a completely different outlook on what you would have seen last year.”

Burn said the band had developed a unique sound, with each member bringing their outside influences to the table.

“Our drummer Matthew Bicket plays in a metal band, and our bass player Simon McGuire has his own electronic project,’’ he said.

“So when we get together it’s a mixed bag, which is really good and we’re always open to sharing ideas.”

Burn said the band — influenced by the likes of Tame Impala, Children Collide and Luca Brasi — had “shied away from the heavier type of music” of their previous EP The Inside Man, which was released last year.

“There’s a lot more groove and still sing-along kind of melodic punk influences,” Burn said.

He said releasing a second EP so soon after the last was driven by the band’s desire to establish their new sound and direction.

Hudson Cartel will play three EP launch shows, kicking off at Hobart’s Republic Bar on Saturday supported by Babylon Howl and Art School Bullies.

They then play at The Gunners Arms Tavern in Launceston on August 24, followed by a gig at Melbourne’s Reverence Hotel on September 15.

Saturday’s show at the Republic Bar kicks off at 9pm. Entry is $5 at the door.
