FIVE

comedians walk into a club … It may sound like a lame joke, but the result is actually the sidesplitting act Comedy Covering Five

Continents, a rollicking stand-up gig to hit Hobart’s Theatre Royal Backspace next Saturday.

Between them, the five Hobartians have lived across five continents, and their experiences in those places inform their gags.

Headline act Pierre Joubert covers four of the continents on his own: born in South Africa to French parents with a link to the North American continent from 10 years lived in New York, followed by a migration to humble Tassie.

“For most of my life I’ve been dreaming about comedy,” Joubert said. “My act is mostly silly one- and two-liners based on my life.

“Three-quarters is based on truth and the other quarter is lies. It’s up to the audience to decide which.”

Joubert has graced the stage with Australian comedy greats Peter Berner, Georgie Carroll and Bob Franklin, but this will be his first time playing the Theatre Royal Backspace.

“I love the venue and the backspace is ideal for stand-up comedy,” he said.

“I wanted to get in before they shut it down, which I think is a shame. It was on my bucket list.”

Comedian Isabella Roldan covers the fifth continent, with her Chilean heritage from South America.

They’ll share the stage with Ben Richardson and Chloe Black, along with MC Maedi Pritchard. Comedy Covering Five

Continents is at the Theatre Royal Backspace at 8pm next Saturday (August 11).

Tickets are $25, go to www.theatreroyal.com.au for bookings.
