Sorell chases big finish

- JAMES BRESNEHAN

SORELL’S season comes to an end one week early in the SFL today, but coach Michael McGregor says his Eagles hope to go out with a bang against Dodges Ferry at Pembroke Park.

With the bye in the last round, the game is Sorell’s “grand final” and the home team has set itself for a big finish.

“There is going to be nothing left in the sheds,” McGregor said.

“We don’t get a chance to redeem ourselves next week so we will give it everything we’ve got.

“If that’s good enough, it is, and if it’s not, it’s not. Our focus for the past seven or eight weeks has been effort and that is crucial to the way we’ve been playing.

“If we can give effort in our last game then hopefully the result will take care of itself.”

The battle of the midfield will decide the contest against Dodges Ferry, placed fourth on the ladder and in prime position to host an elimination final.

The Eagles (eighth) gave Hobart (sixth) a scare last weekend and McGregor is hoping for more of the same.

“Against Hobart our midfield was extraordinarily good,” McGregor said.

“I think we beat Hobart’s midfield, who I really rate.

“Unfortunately our use of the ball in our forward line and our forward line structure didn’t quite work on the smaller ground.

“Dodges have touched us up a bit in the midfield the last couple of times we’ve played them.

“If we have really focused on having our best players in and around that area and if we get that right and get the ball into our forwards it will put us in a good position.”

In other games, Lindisfarne plays Cygnet at Anzac Park, New Norfolk takes on Brighton at Boyer, and Huonville is at home to Hobart.
