South goal blitz, now for Strikers

- SHAUN McMANUS

SOUTH Hobart coach Ken Morton has his sights firmly fixed on next week’s match against the league-leading Devonport Strikers after his team brushed aside Clarence United yesterday.

South cruised to a 7-1 win over the bottom side, taking a 3-1 lead into halftime at Darcy Street before adding a further four unanswered goals after the break.

South climbed back to within six points of the Strikers with four NPL Tasmania rounds to play with the win, and can slash the margin to three with another win over Devonport next week.

Morton was happy with his side’s display against Clarence.

“When you win 7-1 and you create a lot of opportunities and get a lot of shots away, it’s always good, and especially at home, but we’re not getting carried away,” Morton said.

South leapfrogged the Zebras with the win, and Morton hopes the club can continue to climb over the final month.

“Next week we play Devonport at home, and that’s massive for us,” Morton said.

“If we draw or lose, then we’re out of the title race but, if we get a result, then it’s open still. We’ll go into the game confident, but very respectful of a very good Devonport side.”

After a positive first half, Clarence coach Alan Jablonski believed his team was still in the game trailing by two goals at the break.

“I thought it should have been a bit closer at halftime, but the second half just the legs, the extra fitness they have, and just those individual players [got the better of us],” Jablonski said.

Clarence only has four more chances to ensure that it does not endure a winless league season, but Jablonski has faith his players can muster a victory.

“There’s still a couple of games left, and we’ll do our best in all of them and hopefully get a couple of wins by the end of the season,” he said.
