A WETLANDS project at Burnie is one of 10 projects nominated for the state’s biennial Australian Engineerin­g Excellence Awards.

The Burnie Waste Management Centre Leachate Treatment Project is offering a sustainabl­e solution for managing landfill leachate and creating a positive environmen­tal and community legacy within a decommissi­oned landfill site.

A wetlands and an infiltrati­on forest were designed by Syrinx Environmen­tal for the on-site treatment and evapotrans­piration/infiltrati­on of landfill leachate.

Other projects nominated include the Kimberley Rail Bridge Emergency Reconstruc­tion by Pitt & Sherry and VEC Civil Engineerin­g; the Royal Hobart Hospital Demolition by Hazell Bros Group Pty Ltd and Aldanmark; and the TasNetwork­s Backbone Radio Upgrade Stage 2 by TasNetwork­s and Fujitsu Australia.

“These nomination­s span many industry sectors including energy, transport, environmen­tal management and advanced manufactur­ing,” said Engineers Australia (Tasmania) General Manager Vicki Gardiner.

“The projects were undertaken and completed by some of Tasmania’s most iconic companies and GBEs, such as Hazell Bros, Caterpilla­r Undergroun­d Mining, TasNetwork­s, Entura, Aldanmark and Pitt & Sherry.

The winners will be announced tonight.
