THE family of Madison Lyden have described her death as an incomprehensible tragedy and asked for others to show kindness to each other in her memory.
In a loving tribute in today’s Mercury, Madison’s family — lead by father Andrew, mother Amanda, sisters Paige and Tatum and brother Daniel — say they were honoured to have irreplaceable memories of her. “You will forever be remembered in our hearts for your caring nature, unique beauty and quirky personality,” it reads.
“Your booming laughter, playful ways, and fearless questions were one of a kind.”
“The ability you had to overcome hardships is an inspiration to us all; you truly were magnificent.”
Ms Lyden, 23 was on the trip of a lifetime to the United States when she stopped off in New York City with friend Pam Mansfield. It was while riding her bicycle on a bike lane near Central Park on Saturday (AEST) that she swerved to avoid an Uber blocking her way and was knocked down by a garbage truck. She died shortly after. The truck driver was arrested on charges including driving while intoxicated.
The news of Ms Lyden’s death sparked grief and tributes from Tasmania, where she grew up, and in Victoria, where she studied psychology at Deakin University before starting work with City of Greater Geelong as a lifeguard.
Heartbroken friends paid tribute to the bubbly, smart woman after the tragedy, with Emily Boubis writing on social media: “You brought so much love, light and laughter to my life, and I’ll cherish that for a very long time. You were a bubbly and bright soul, and a wonderful friend. Thank you for everything we shared.”
Friend Caity Ashton said meeting Ms Lyden at Deakin University was “one of the best things that happened to me”.
“She was so beautiful both inside and out.”
