Back to take an odd angry shot

-

TASMANIAwill experience an unstoppable force of nature when recently reunited rockers Mammal shake venues across the state this weekend.

The Melbourne four-piece will spout protest messages of political and social injustice in a blaze of blistering basslines, thumping drum playing and screaming guitar.

Frenzied frontman Ezekiel Ox is gearing up to spit his rapid-fire, fury-fuelled poetry in defiance of “the system” on their national Community Tour.

“It comes from a real point of anger and I guess trying to show people that we [the people] have power,” Ox said.

“We’re trying to take it out to people and we’re trying at least give people something to dance to while they ponder the revolution.”

The hard-rock four-piece visited Tasmania in 2007 for Launceston’s MS Fest and again on tour with progressive rock group Karnivool, before Mammal disbanded in 2009.

Ox said at the time that the breakup was due to “longstanding personal, political, musical and business differences”.

He said he reached out to his bandmates last year after a painful 10 years apart.

“It was very personal,” Ox said.

To celebrate one year since the reunion, Mammal released their new single Dead in July.

Ox said internal and external factors had changed the band since 2009.

“Mammal’s music is becoming more and more aggressive at the moment, and I think it’s a direct response to [One Nation founder and Queensland senator Pauline] Hanson being back in Parliament, [Far-Right political party] Golden Dawn being back in Greece and the [Donald] Trump presidency [in the US],’’ he said.

“We’re becoming more aggressive in a way because it is becoming necessary to fight even harder.

“We’re not going anywhere this time. We’re working on a new album and we’re really excited for the future and what it can bring.”

Mammal play at the Bridge Hotel at Forth tonight, at Club 54 in Launceston tomorrow, and at the Republic Bar in North Hobart on Saturday.
