A real test of their metal

HOBART’S international death metal exports Psycroptic are back in town next week for a one-night-only gig as they wind up a hectic touring schedule.

After a career spanning nearly two decades, Psycroptic continue to make their mark on the global metal scene, but they admit it’s been a little while between drinks for live shows on home turf.

Coming from humble beginnings in West Hobart and Kingston, Psycroptic have managed to “carve a pretty cool life” touring their brand of death and (sub-cult) grind metal to their large base of fans across Europe, the US and Canada.

Since forming in 1999, Psycroptic have released six studio albums, with their last self-titled album, released in March 2015, reaching No.59 on the ARIA album chart.

The band’s frontman and drummer Dave Haley said a new album was on the horizon once their national tour wraps up in Adelaide next Saturday.

“I can confirm the new album is almost wrapped up and hopefully won’t be too long away,” he said.

Haley and his guitarist brother, Joe, formed Psycroptic in 1999, and the pair still perform with lead vocalist Jason Peppiatt. They have recently inducted US bassist Todd Stern into the fold.

Psycroptic play at Hobart’s Brisbane Hotel next week with Canadian technical death band Archspire.

“We’ll have our Canadian friends in Archspire, who are fast-rising stars in the metal scene worldwide,’’ Haley said.

“Also definitely not to be missed are Zeolite and the Absolution Sequence, two excellent up-and-coming Tassie bands.

“People need to get there when doors open because every band is world-class.”

Psycroptic perform at the Brisbane Hotel from 8pm next Friday (August 24). Tickets are $25 available from Oztix and Eventbrite, or at the door (if not already sold out).
