Take a Guided tour of the 1980s

-

FRIZZup your mullet and slip into your parachute pants — local Scouts and Guides are taking a trip back to the 1980s via the 43rd annual Hobart Gang Show, which opens tonight.

Each year, the Gang Show gives a cast of young Scouts and Guides the opportunity to develop their theatrical skills and perform in a semi-professional environment. The concept started in London in 1932 and soon spread around the world, reaching Hobart in 1956.

The Hobart Gang Show originally ran for a decade, then took a 21-year break before returning in 1991.

Written, produced and performed by Hobart Gang Show members, this year’s production, As Seen On TV, takes audiences into the home of a typical Aussie family who are forced to seek alternative entertainment when their afternoon barbecue is rained out.

The family heads inside to the loungeroom and gathers around the television, and are enthralled by a series of classic programs from the 1980s.

Showcasing the onstage and behind-the-scenes talent of the young Scouts and Guides, As Seen On TV features some well-known characters, catchy songs, colourful costumes, sensational sets and plenty of fun.

The 2018 Hobart Gang Show, As Seen On TV, will be performed at Hobart College’s Mount Nelson Theatre (Olinda Grove) from 7.30pm tonight, tomorrow and Saturday, and also at 2pm Saturday. Tickets are $17.70 for adults and $11.70 concession, available at the door or pre-sale from www.trybooking.com/SUMY
