Tearful Cousins begs for mercy

- TIM CLARKE

FALLEN footballing hero Ben Cousins yesterday unsuccessfully begged a magistrate through tears not to send him back to prison, as it was alleged he had issued a series of terrifying threats towards the mother of his children – including a menacing promise to bury her alive in a Perth park.

In a new low for the exWest Coast star, Cousins was sent back to prison after being arrested allegedly internally carrying more than 13 grams of the drug ice.

In a small West Australian court, Cousins at times struggled to comprehend the newest raft of criminal charges he faces, which include aggravated stalking of his former partner Maylea Tinecheff, an aggravated burglary on her home, and more than a dozen breaches of a violence restraining order she has out against him.

Cousins allegedly threatened to abduct Ms Tinecheff and bury her alive in a park and then take their children to the spot “where you will be able to hear them but not be able to get to them”.

In a rambling personal bail application the now 40 yearold poured out his despair.

Cousins claimed it was he who had become a victim of the legal system, and that he was a danger to no-one. His only wish, he said, was to see more of his children.

Cousins will remain in jail until at least October.

It was also revealed that Cousins has tried to get hold of his Brownlow Medal to sell it to pay for his ice addiction. His father has the medal in safe keeping.
