Matt keen to go tell it on the mountain

singer-songwriter Matt Dean is making it clear which side of the Mt Wellington cable car debate he’s on, launching a new EP featuring The No Cable Car Song at Salamanca next week.

Dean has been a regular on the Hobart live scene in recent years, after returning from a stint in the UK, where he spent five years living in Liverpool, sharpening his songwriting skills with members of bands such as The La’s and The Zutons.

In mid-2015 Dean released the album Once You Jump Over, featuring eight tracks written over the previous seven years.

He followed that up with Snakes and Ladders a year later, before releasing his third album in less than three years, No One Can Run — featuring the single Come and Go Too Far — last July.

Last month Dean returned with yet another CD, No Cable Car and other love songs, featuring his protest anthem The No Cable Car Song and four other new tracks.

Dean says next week’s EP launch gig “is a music event and not a political one, although one of the songs is a protest song about a local issue. The other songs are about love and hope.”

Matt Dean launches the No Cable Car and other love songs EP as part of the weekly Noteworthy singersongwriter night at Irish Murphy’s (Salamanca) from 8pm on Wednesday. The event will also feature performances by Ryk Goddard and Katie Wilson. Entry is free.
