Mercury (Hobart)

Tap into an absolute classic

WHAT does it take to become a Broadway star? Find out next week when Hobart’s Musical Theatre Crew presents the much-loved musical comedy 42nd Street.

The musical peers behind the curtain to explore what goes on backstage as a Broadway director battles a series of complications that threaten to sink his new play before it even begins — including ruthless auditionees, script rewrites, and a demanding diva.

When the star of the show breaks her ankle just before opening night, the director has no choice but to call on newcomer Peggy Sawyer — a talented young performer who arrives from out of town, armed only with her tap shoes and big dreams.

This production of 42nd Street features two alternating casts of talented youngsters aged 15-18, including Caitlin Carnaby and Sophie Williams as the ambitious Peggy, Petrea James and Lucinda Smith as Broadway star Dorothy Brock, and Brandon Chilcott as director Julian Marsh, who will do whatever it takes to make sure the show goes on.

“The cast have found it intriguing to look at the parallels of their own experiences and dreams to perform professionally on Broadway or the West End, and really get to understand what it takes to become a star,” director Leiz Moore says.

Full of dynamic dance routines, dazzling costumes and toe-tapping tunes such as We’re

in the Money, the Hobart Musical Theatre Crew production of 42nd Street will be performed at the Playhouse Theatre from August 30 until September 8. Tickets are $29-$35, go to www.musicaltheatrecrew.com for bookings.
