Time to turn up the heat

-

NORTH Hobart heats up for some Hot August Jazz on Sunday. From noon until midnight, 11 venues within walking distance of each other will host more than 58 local acts playing a combined 57 hours of live music in a showcase of Tassie jazz talent.

The free event kicks off at the Queen’s Hotel and wraps up at the Republic Bar, with beats pumping out from both venues throughout the half-day jam-fest.

The annual festival, which usually attracts more than 2500 music lovers, will feature all styles of jazz, from the funk sounds of the 25-piece Hobart College House Band to the gypsy swing of Django’s Tiger, featuring double-bassist Isaac Gee, to the Latin swing of Swingmatism.

Funk, zydeco, traditional and mainstream jazz will spill on to the North Hobart streets from a range of solo acts, duos and bands.

“This is our 14th year and it’s our biggest one yet,” said Hobart Jazz Club president Kaye Payne.

“It’s the hottest program in town and everyone is welcome to attend.”

This year’s host venues include the North Hobart Uniting Church, The Winston, Fish 349, Raincheck Lounge, Roaring Grill, T-Bone Brewing Co, Willing Bros Wine Merchants, The Homestead and Room for a Pony.

Make sure you plan your day in advance if you have a list of must-hear bands, because just like the daily activity schedule on a cruise ship, the program is full of back-to-back shows. Go to www.hobartjazzclub.com for the full program.
