Cheers to collaboration brews

- ROGER HANSON

THE Tasmanian Microbrew Festival early next month will showcase how local craft brewers collaborate to create never-before-tasted special limited releases.

Students of Advanced Diploma of Hospitality and Tourism at TasTAFE Drysdale plan and manage Microbrew Fest at Hobart’s Princes Wharf 1 on September 8 as an annual event showcasing the finest brews in Tasmania. A crowd of more than 3000 is expected.

A project team leader Tracy Hesketh said there would be offerings from more than 20 brewers plus fruity ciders.

“Beer and cider fans will be able to try at least 10 limited releases, developed specifically for Microbrew Fest,” she said.

Hobart Brewing Company general manager Brendan Parnell said the festival was ideal to showcase interesting seasonal releases, which included smoked apple bock, imperial porter, Tascadian dark ale and stout porter. HBC will host its Hoptoberfest on October 20.

“We also will taking along our limited release beers and our range in cans. The festival is a good opportunity for us, as a brewer, to talk with people who haven’t been to the brewery,” he said.

“Some of the releases show the high level of collaboration within the local craft beer industry.”

Student Diana Xiong, who hopes to work in the hospitality industry, said the event was project managed from scratch by a group of 13 students according to project management principles.
