Girls bring on footy feast for dad

- BRETT STUBBS

IT might have been Dad’s Day but it was the daughters dominating at North Hobart Oval yesterday in the first of the STJFL grand finals.

There were plenty of celebrations, but also the occasional heartache and none more so than for Claremont in the under-13s.

The Magpies had not lost a game all season, only to come undone in the match that really counted by a goal to the Kingborough Tigers, 2.2 (14) to 1.2 (8), with the Tigers Meg Harrison named best afield.

In the under-15s, it was North Hobart, led by best on ground Meiren Swift with three goals, which cruised to a strong win over Sandy Bay, 8.6 (54) to 2.1 (13).

New Norfolk was victorious in the under-17s with a commanding win, 6.4 (40) over Kingborough Tigers 3.8 (26), with New Norfolk’s Perri King the best player.

In the only boys’ game yesterday, Glenorchy thrashed Huonville for the under-14C premiership by 64 points, 14.13 (97) to 5.3 (33).

Glenorchy’s Luke Brown, brother of North Melbourne spearhead Ben Brown, was named the Magpies’ best, but in a herculean effort it was the Lions Travis Hickey named best on ground despite being on the wrong end of the scoreboard.

An estimated 2000 people flocked through the gates to see yesterday’s action, and even more is expected next Sunday when the boys get their turn.

There will be five grand finals decided next Sunday ranging from under-13s up to under-18s.
