Boss shares sack row text

Cricket chief’s message to Premier

- DAVID KILLICK

CRICKET Tasmania CEO Nick Cummins has released his side of a text message exchange with Premier Will Hodgman about social media commentary which led to the sacking of a staff member.

In the message, Mr Cummins apologised to the Premier and Health Minister Michael Ferguson over Twitter posts by Cricket Tasmania’s then-government relations manager Angela Williamson.

Ms Williamson used her tweets to criticise government policy on abortion, after she had to travel to Melbourne for a termination because the state’s only closed down.

On Twitter, Ms Williamson described Mr Ferguson’s comments in Parliament on the issue as “irresponsible, gutless and reckless” because of their impact on vulnerable women.

Mr Cummins sent a message to Mr Hodgman after becoming aware of the tweet.

“Hi Will, hopefully you will have heard from Ange by now. I just wanted to apologise for the nature of her tweet, it was completely unacceptable and showed a lack of respect for Michael [Ferguson]. I do not tolerate that kind of behaviour at Cricket Tasmania and it will be the first and last time your provider had government is subject to something like that. If possible, can you share Michael Ferguson’s number, I would like to apologise to him too. Hope all is well Nick.”

Mr Cummins did not comment further yesterday.

The Premier released his reply to Mr Cummins on Monday. He put the Cricket Tasmania CEO in touch with Mr Ferguson and said it would be “great to catch up”.

A spokesman said the pair have not subsequently met.

Ms Williamson was sacked in late June. She is taking action in the Federal Court for wrongful dismissal.
