Another success for Keys

- PETER STAPLES

FINDING the right name for a racehorse can be a taxing task especially if you have an extremely busy work schedule.

Wesley Vale trainer John Keys usually looks for names that have a meaning so when he sent off an application to have a Needs Further colt named Jockey Said he was disappointed and frustrated when advised that it had been disallowed by the registrar.

“I was keen to name him Jockey Said because so often I have had jockeys say to me after a race that the horse they’ve just ridden will be all right but it just needs further,” Keys said.

“That’s the most popular excuse they come up with so with that name [Needs Fur- ther] already taken by the stallion that stands at Armidale Stud, I settled on Jockey Said.

“The registrar rang me and said I couldn’t name a horse with the word jockey in it because it seemed inappropriate and that I would have to submit another.

“I told her I wasn’t prepared to go through the whole naming process again so just call him Submit Another and that’s how he got his name.”

In Devonport last Sunday Submit Another delivered an impressive effort to score an emphatic maiden win over 1650m with Siggy Carr aboard, much to the surprise of most punters. Submit Another paid $52 on the tote and $41 with fixed-odds operators after as much as $61 was offered.

“His form was pretty good because the horse that started one of the favourites, Uncovered ($3.80), only beat him a half-length the previous time they met so he was paying big overs.”

Submit Another (Needs Further-Starred) settled just worse than midfield off a solid tempo, but when Carr called on him to improve 600m from home he quickly put himself into the race.

Once balanced in the home straight he powered home to score by a length from Uncovered with the favourite The Decider (2.50) a close-up third.

Keys made it a race-to-race double when his talented sprinter Amaword (Wordsmith-Amarlia) scored a bril- liant first-up win in a benchmark 70 handicap over 1150m. Amaword ($7.50 into $6) settled third but always looked to be travelling well and when Carr eased him off the fence to challenge turning for home, he went on to score by five lengths from the favourite Silzoar ($2.90) with Jacques ($7.50) third.

It was a nice change of luck for Keys who is recovering from a nasty injury to his right cheekbone and eye socket as a result of being kicked in the face by one of his unraced youngsters.

“I’ve had two operations on the eye socket with the latest one very successful. It’s getting better every day,” Keys said.
