Milbourne no match for Sydney’s finest at titles
TASMANIA Golf Club’s Georgia Milbourne performed admirably at last week’s Queensland Women’s Stroke Play Championship.
The 20-year-old had rounds of 79, 85, 80 and 78 to finish in a tie for 33rd.
Ulverstone Golf Club’s Brady Ludbey failed to make the cut for the final two rounds of the men’s event. The 18year-old student had scores of 81 and 86 for his share of 148th place on the final leaderboard.
Sydneysiders Jordie Garner and Doey Choi won their men’s and women’s stroke play titles at Gailes Golf Club and McLeod Country Club respectively. Garner and Choi were seeded No.1 for the Queensland Amateur Championships played later in the week at Gailes. Choi went on to defeat No.7 seed Rhianna Lewis of Queensland 4&3 in a stunning final match to claim the women’s amateur title.
And 17-year-old Louis Dobbelaar, also of Queensland, won the corresponding men’s amateur after defeating Victoria’s Blake Collyer 6&4. THE first and quarter-final rounds of the Southern Country Golf Association’s RHL Roberts Memorial Trophy are at Richmond Golf Club this weekend.
Kingston Beach is the defending champion and will be looking to go back to back and claim the club’s 13th RHL Rob- erts title. David Pretyman and Matthew Glover will represent the champions and take on Claremont’s Bryan Sackley and Tony Sansom in the opening round.
Tasmania Golf Club holds the most RHL Roberts victories with 14 wins in the event’s rich 55-year history.
Dylan Backhouse and Oscar Burrell will be hoping to extend that margin when they clash with the winner of the Tea Tree and Orford match in the quarter-final round.
Representing Tea Tree will be Matthew Cross and Anthony Britten, while father-son combination Winston Johnston Sr and Jr will tee up for Orford. Among the other opening-round matches being conducted, Richmond’s Brett Adams and Neil Sculthorpe will take on Leigh Gorringe and Gary Smith from Iron Pot.
New Town Bay’s Preston Downie and Craig Smith will take on Pittwater’s Adam Mahoney and John Brockman.
The event is a foursomes match-play knockout tournament which concludes with the semi and final rounds at Royal Hobart on September 16. THE final round of the Women’s Golf Tasmania-South Open and Division Two Championships was conducted recently at the Royal Hobart Golf Club.
Tasmania Golf Club’s Mackenzie Wilson took out the Open Championship with rounds of 81 and 83, a 36-hole total of 164. Fellow local member Dianne Ratcliffe won the division two championship with rounds of 107 and 99.
