Residents left behind

Embrace visitors

HOBART is a small city with very little to promise its youth as to future employment. There is very little chance of getting any large scale employment. That is why they are leaving en masse. Why can’t we think of our young people instead of burying heads in the sand and saying, “We don’t want any progress, leave things as they are, as they have been for the last 50 years!” This is why the rest of Tasmania and the world is embracing tourism. Look at the number of Asian people who visited Hobart last year and this year we will welcome more cruise ships than ever.

It is a disgrace Hobart’s Lord Mayor and his six verdant acolytes are doing their best to make sure no tourist sets foot on the staid Hobart ground. Their latest is to deny an inner city development on Brisbane St, with accommodation and parking while clearing carparks and under-used semi-industrial buildings. It would help alleviate the accommodation crisis. Greens leader Cassy O’Connor slams Premier Will Hodgman’s position on China in the Antarctic We should not be naive to China’s motives. They do not play by the same rules as us. Look at the Spratly and Paracel Islands as one small example. ROBERT Clifford’s comments are spoton. As a resident of Bruny I am totally frustrated and disgusted by this process that threatens our ability to travel without undue hindrance on our main road to the rest of our state. We will be relegated to the lowest priority if a booking system is introduced. Tourists and tourism operators will be able to book well in advance. Residents will have to comply or arrive really early if unbooked and no certainty of which ferry they will finally get on. So much for addressing the needs of residents. So sad for Bruny.

White elephant

IT seems this cable car on Mt Wellington is going to be another white elephant like the Derwent Entertainment Centre. Another bill for ratepayers to pick up. We need more focus on health and business.
