Weir tips Humidor to salute in Makybe Diva Stakes

- MICHAEL MANLEY

DARREN Weir has nominated Group 1 star Humidor as his horse to beat in today’s $750,000 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington.

Weir has four strong spring players in the 1600m race, but believes the timing is right for Humidor.

“Humidor’s in great shape and he loves Flemington. He’s my preference as I think it’s more of a suitable race for him,” he said.

Weir also has Kings Will Dream, veteran Black Heart Bart and highly credentialed ex-Japanese galloper Tosen Basil in the race.

Weir said drawing inside barriers had made a difference to Humidor and the way he was racing this preparation.

“He’s been drawing a gate and as a result he hasn’t been racing with his head on his side,” Weir said.

Humidor drew barrier three when he won the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield at his last start, which was his third Group 1 win. Humidor’s other Group 1 wins have also come at Flemington in the Makybe Diva Stakes and Australian Cup last year.

Last preparation he also won the Group 2 Blamey Stakes over 1600m at Flemington.

Humidor is a $4.20 favourite for today’s race, and Kementari is second favourite at $4.50 while Kings Will Dream is rated a $5 chance.

Weir said he was contemplating Kings Will Dream pushing forward from barrier 10 in a race which could lack speed.

“Kings Will Dream looks terrific,” he said. “There’s not going to be much between Humidor and Kings Will Dream.”

Weir is also looking forward to former Japanese galloper Tosen Basil ($61) making his Australian debut. “He’s a great-looking horse with good ability. It wouldn’t shock us if he ran a great race,” he said.

Weir said eight-year-old gelding Black Heart Bart ($34), who has placed in this race the past two years, was ready to improve.
