BE sure to pack your hiking boots! Cancer Council Tasmania will play host to a breakfast fundraiser at Wrest Point Casino on Friday in the lead- up to the 2018 Kokoda Challenge.

Twelve participants have volunteered to complete the gruelling nine-day expedition in November with all proceeds to assist those diagnosed with the disease.

Michele Duffy, a participant and breast cancer survivor, was looking forward to the physical and mental test posed by the Kokoda Track.

“We’re looking for that sense of mateship,” she said. “Most of us have personal experiences with cancer or family members who have been affected.”

Ms Duffy is prepared for the humid conditions. “I’m expecting leaches, mud and water,” she said.

Cancer Council Tasmania chief executive Penny Egan said walking the Kokoda Track will be the “experience of a lifetime.”

“The 12 participants have pledged to raise at least $2000 each and several of them have easily surpassed that total,” Mrs Egan said.

“All funds raised will stay in Tasmania to assist the more than nine people daily who receive a cancer diagnosis.”

Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame inductee and former high-flying Melbourne Demons star Russell Robertson will attend the breakfast, which will be held at Wrest Point’s Derwent Room. Tickets are $60 per person.
