These high achievers rock

-

ABAND of mega-talented Hobart students have announced themselves as future stars of the state’s live music scene by winning two categories of the 2018 Tasmanian Rock Challenge.

Australia’s longest-running high school and college concert series, the Tasmanian Rock Challenge is a statewide competition for Grade 7-12 students designed to recognise emerging talent and celebrate youth achievement in contemporary music.

Over the past two decades the Rock Challenge has provided countless young musicians with an important stepping stone into the industry, giving them a chance to showcase their skills while getting all-important experience and recognition.

Previous winners have included the likes of Jordan Millar and The Scientists of Modern Music.

Heats were held in Ulverstone, Hobart and Launceston this month, with a total of 76 acts taking part, representing 23 schools across the state. The best acts from each heat were then selected to perform in the state final, which took place at Launceston’s Saloon Bar last Thursday night.

Taroona High School indie-rock group Mega Love — featuring Grade 10 students Kieran Mulvany (vocals, guitar), Seb Folvig (bass), Annwen Roberts (drums) and Tristan Meffre (keyboards) — were the big winners on the night. Not only were they named Best High School Band, but their track What To Say also picked up the award for Best Original Song.

Rosny College musicians also fared well, with duo Dylan & Dan winning the College Acoustic section, and Baby Dave frontman Joe Stone named Best Male Performer.

A Rock Challenge school holidays workshop for ages 14-17 will be held at the Moonah Arts Centre on Wednesday. Go to www.moonahartscentre.org.au for details.
