Mercury (Hobart)

It’s time to play it cool

-

PEEK behind the curtain and learn just what it takes to write and produce a hit musical next week, when the Old Nick Company’s very meta new production, (title of show), opens in Hobart.

A one-act musical comedy … about writing a musical comedy, (title of show) explores the struggles faced by an author, a composer and two actresses as they attempt to create — in just three weeks — a new play for an upcoming theatre festival.

Despite their doubts, suspicions and insecurities, the production proves to be a hit, and plans are hatched to take the show to Broadway. But that’s when things really start to unravel, as tension builds before finally boiling over.

Frequently funny, occasionally heartbreaking and always inspiring, (title of show) premiered in New York in 2004 and moved to Broadway in 2008, with author Hunter Bell nominated for a Tony Award.

Now the production is set to be staged in Hobart for the first time, with first-time director Justin Turner — who has assembled a talented cast of seasoned performers including Sam Dean, David Abbott, Sophie Tyrell and Rebecca Oliver-Black — at the helm.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity and I’m really excited about bringing this show to the Hobart stage,” Turner says.

“Being an unknown show, we’re all really excited to show Hobart why we love this show so much — and we promise you’ll fall in love with it too”.

Old Nick presents (title of show) at the Peacock Theatre (Salamanca Arts Centre) from October 5-13, with performances at 8pm Tuesday-Saturday plus a 4pm matinee on October 7.

Tickets are $39, or $35 concession. For bookings go to www.centertainment.com.au or phone 6234 5998.
