Tigers excited by new rules

TASSIE Tigers coach Glenn Freeman hopes new rules introduced to this year’s Australian Hockey League will benefit his side’s aim to return to the semi-finals.

With the Tigers set to play their first home match since 2011 on October 6 against ACT, Freeman is excited for the new format.

“Last year we narrowly missed out on the semi-finals despite two big wins, after we gave up a one-goal lead to lose to Queensland 4-3 and drew 1-1 with Victoria,” Freeman reflected.

“They were the two sides that played off in the AHL final, with Victoria winning in a shootout, so we weren’t far off the mark and are working hard to prepare well.”

Hockey Australia has introduced new rules including 14-player matchday squads, an automatic shootout opportunity after a field goal and five-minute powerplays to excite and engage fans.

The Tigers squad will trial the modified rules tonight in a full-scale practice match against the Premier League All Stars, a side featuring local stars such as Ian McHugh, Jai Walker-Kidd and Vaughn Bowen.

“It will be fantastic to step up our preparation against a strong side with the new rules and for selectors to cast their eye over some potential debutants in our squad,” Freeman added.

The Tigers and All Stars match begins tonight at 6.15pm.
