Andy tunes his inner Tubes

- JACK PAYNTER

HE’S Hobart’s loveable larrikin who is having a tilt at the city council’s deputy lord mayor vacancy.

Andy Taylor is so wellknown by his nickname ‘Tubes’, the Tasmanian Electoral Commission have included it on the ballot paper.

“Not a lot of people know that my name is Andy,” he said.

“Since grade 6 I’ve been known as Tubes, my schoolteachers called me Tubes, even my mum and dad call me Tubes.

“So I wrote to the Electoral Commission and they said we just need to know you are known as that, so I sent them quite a few of my Duff TV videos.”

The nickname is a family heirloom passed on from his dad, who’s now known as ‘Big Tubes’.

Mr Taylor is already a familiar face around Greater Hobart — he’s hosted events and trivia nights, acted in local advertisements, commentated on local sports and owns a local business making homemade sauce.

The 36-year-old fatherof-one said he decided to run for alderman because he felt the current crop didn’t accurately represent people like him and his family.

“I don’t feel like there’s anyone in there I could talk to over a beer at the footy,” he said.

“I want to be that candidate people can see walking my dog through North Hobart and say, ‘Tubes can I have a word’.”

He said he would be a voice for the people who feel like they don’t have one.

“I want to see the people out there in the community that are having a crack and I want to back them,” he said.

He said hopefully the people of Hobart would turn out to vote because it was an important and exciting time for Tasmania.
