Butchers like theirs a bit pink

BUTCHERS in a Hobart shop are donning pink aprons and caps to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer support.

During October Tasmanian Meat Wholesaler­s, in Campbell St, is joining 48 other independen­t butchers throughout Tasmania for the Pink Butcher campaign, run by the Australian Meat Industry Council. The campaign raises funds and awareness for Breast Cancer Network Australia.

Tas Meat Wholesaler­s operations manager Dave Dillon said butchers had created special Australian pork pink butcher sausages.

“We’ve used beetroot to give the extra pink colour, along with goats’ cheese. We had to experiment a bit to get the colouring correct. They are great tasty sausages,” Mr Dillon said.

“We are happy to be supporting the campaign. It’s not often you see blokes wearing pink, I think I might cop some ribbing but it’s all in a good cause.”

The butchers’ effort will also include donation tins on the counter.

The breast cancer network works to ensure Australian­s affected by breast cancer receive support, informatio­n, treatment and care appropriat­e to their needs by providing free resources about breast cancer, a telephone hotline and running informatio­n forums.

This year, 50 Australian­s will be diagnosed with breast cancer every day. This includes 150 men over the course of the year.
