How times have changed

- J. Featherstone Blackmans Bay Alan Leitch Austins Ferry WASHING: Adelong, Princes Wharf. Lib Cooper Lifeline Tasmania Joseph Vagunda Taroona

FOLLOWING visits some years ago to a number of cruise ship conferences in Miami by the then management of the Marine Board of Hobart, we have seen regular calls of cruise ships to the port of Hobart and at that time everyone could not have been happier. But today, it seems operators of such ships are no longer in favour with some of the public because of emissions. Such a reaction reminds me of the 1950s and beyond, at which time there was a ship named Adelong. Amongst other steamers (coal burners) she made regular calls to Hobart. However, when Adelong put her nose around Sandy Bay point, all the ladies of Battery Point worked together to circulate the ship’s pending arrival and any washing hanging on the line would always be taken down and moved inside immediately. No cruise ship today has ever been able to, or will ever replicate Adelong.

Bridge scenes

I CAN understand the bridge being constructed over the Tasman Highway making it safer for pedestrians wanting access across the Tasman Highway. However I cannot see the necessity for the bridge from the bottom of Bathurst St over the Brooker Highway when there is already safe access via the pedestrian underpasses at the Railway Roundabout.

Once the bridge across the Tasman Highway has been completed, local street and graffiti artists should be employed to paint the bridge with scenes of indigenous and European history, rather than leave it blank for illegal graffiti. It would change a drab concrete overpass into a canvas of history that would be a welcoming sight for visitors and locals coming into the city from the Tasman Bridge.
