Schraner, Banks in with shot at glory

- ROB McGUIRE

THE local hopes continue to dominate the 2018 Australian Champion of Champions, with defending champion Lee Schraner from Rosny Park and rising star Lauren Banks from New Norfolk among those to remain undefeated after the first two days competition.

The singles championship continued yesterday at Kingborough, with the local duo joined by Victorian Kylie Whitehead, who also progressed to today’s final two matches without a loss.

Banks is bowling with more consistency and confidence as the championship progresses and it showed in her convincing win over NSW’s Lee Benson yesterday.

Banks won the first three ends to jump out to a sixshot lead and was never headed, eventually winning by 12 shots.

Whitehead, the 2017 Australian Championships singles winner, sits at the top of the women’s field, on equal wins with Banks but with a superior 17-shot difference.

The two will meet in the final session of play today.

In the men’s’ field, Schraner leads all comers on top of the standings, with Victoria’s Barrie Lester trailing just one win behind in second.

The two meet in the final session of play today and with Lester’s superior 27-shot difference, the gold-medal opportunity is still very much wide open.

The final two rounds will be played today commencing at 8.30am and 11.15am.
