Seniors’ positive gift to community

- JAMES KITTO

RETIREE Mike Bowden is a prime example of why Tasmania’s senior volunteers add so positively to the community.

Mr Bowden, an active senior volunteer for Wildcare Tasmania, has donated his time on a daily basis for the past 16 years to helping the non-profit organisation.

As part of this year’s Seniors Week, Wildcare Tasmania, a conservation organisation for Tasmania’s wildlife and heritage, is shining a light on the organisation’s highly valued senior volunteers.

Wildcare chief executive Sharon Smith said Mr Bowden was among a number of remarkable volunteers who had made an outstanding contribution to the organisation.

“These volunteers often report what a great feeling it is to be a part of something special,” she said.

“The work they have done and continue to do has benefits that reach beyond the precious places that they work to protect.

“Volunteering is also a great way to transition positively into retirement from paid work.”

Mr Bowden, a member of Wildcare’s Friends of Freycinet Group, said he had enjoyed making a positive contribution to the organisation.

“It’s always good to feel valued and useful,” he said.

“This voluntary job has certainly provided me with that, especially assisting members with their unique queries.”

Wildcare welcomes new volunteers and has branch activities across Tasmania in areas of conservation including coastal, heritage, island, flora, fauna and education.
