Hooked on Squid Fishing
FANCY a spot of Squid Fishing at Marion Bay?
You will after checking out this Hobart indie punk band, which is the Mercury’s Falls Festival Foster Band for 2018.
The winner of the foster band competition will get the chance to perform alongside the likes of Anderson. Paak and his band The Free Nationals, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Dizzee Rascal, and Chvrches.
Squid Fishing — Zena Mohamad (vocals, guitar), Ethan Groombridge (drums), Nelson Otten (guitar), and Zen Cane (bass) — is a proven performer on the big stage.
It has played at festivals including Party In The Paddock and supported the likes of AJJ, Slowly Slowly, and Bugs.
Squid Fishing also played at Falls on the Homebrewed stage last year straight after one of its major influences — The Smith Street Band — finished on the main stage.
“That was such a high, being able to play anywhere at that festival,” Mohamad said.
“I definitely think we’re ready to step up to the main stage, because of the progress we’ve made in a year.
“We’re really working towards being industry professionals — there’s a line between being a local band and becoming a touring act, and I feel like we’re taking the necessary steps to get there.”
In previous years, the Mercury has successfully fostered The Mornings, the Christopher Coleman Collective, Lulu and the Paige-Turners, Verticoli, Close Counters and Jensen, and we would love to add Squid Fishing to the list.
They’re up against Ruben Reeves, fostered by Warp.
Voting is open until Friday, November 23.
