TASMANIA Police is reminding motorists to slow down, pay attention and wear their seatbelt after 16 drivers were detected breaking the road rules in just three hours.

The North-West road safety task force caught 10 people speeding, one not wearing a seatbelt and five using their mobile phone while driving during the traffic operation on the Bass Highway at Sulphur Creek on Thursday.

Western District road and public order services Inspector Adrian Shadbolt said one of the speedsters was detected doing 151km/h in a 110km/h zone.

“In light of today’s traffic operation results it’s timely to reinforce to drivers that driving dangerously and continuing to break the road rules puts them and others at risk of serious injury and death on our roads,” he said.

“As part of our strategy to reduce fatal and serious crashes, Tasmania Police will continue to conduct both covert and overt traffic enforcement operations, and remind motorists to slow down, pay attention, and wear your seatbelt — we could be anywhere.”

The driver nabbed doing 41km/h over the limit was disqualified from driving for three months and received a penalty of six demerit points and a fine of $692.75.

Another motorist who was detected speeding at 37km/h over the limit in the same area received a penalty of five demerit points and a fine of $489.00.
