Sandy Bay’s gritty win

SANDY Bay did what most clubs have been unable to do in recent years, defeating Buckingham by 13 shots in cold, wet and windy conditions on Buckingham’s synthetic fortress in Bowls Tasmania South Premier Division on Saturday.

Sandy Bay led comfortabl­y at the afternoon tea break and fought off a comeback from Buckingham to record a fine win. With Laura Best leading brilliantl­y, Keghan Booth easily beat Ricky Maughan by 13 shots. Josh Mabb was too good for Isaac Maughan, winning by 12 shots. Buckingham won on the other two rinks.

Geoff Woolley was outstandin­g in his debut Premier Division game and Alvin Cooke defeated Andrew Norris by eight shots. After a poor start, Michael Taylor recovered from 3-18 down with Jorja Maughan playing well to win every remaining end to win by four shots against Bryce Guy.

Glenorchy Rodman won the grand final rematch against Rosny Park by one shot despite only winning on one rink. With Mikayla Baker playing well, Luke Turner had a day out against Connor Munnings, winning by 18 shots.

Kelvin Lynema led brilliantl­y for Tony Vince who played out a draw with David Genford — who played some big bowls himself to keep his rink in the game. Rosny Park won on the other two rinks.

Mick Sweeney converted some heads at crucial times to defeat Cam Tegg by nine shots and Peter Bannister accounted for Josh Baker by eight.

Beltana had a 21-shot win over Brighton. Scott Summers led the way with a 23-shot win over John North and Shane Young defeated Mick Daniels by eight shots. Paul Williamson and Greg Fehlberg could not be separated, playing out a draw. Brighton won on the other rink, with Grant Wakefield defeating Nick Courto.

Playing in the comfort of the home side’s indoor centre, Kingboroug­h defeated New Norfolk by 17 shots. Jason Fowler set up the win with a 10-shot win over Mitch Banks. Jarrod Long defeated Kerry Hill by eight shots and Brent Forsyth beat Barry Bone by four shots. New Norfolk’s David McLean defeated Ryan Guy by five shots.

Howrah easily defeated North Hobart by 42 shots. Chris Chalker defeated Ross Bannister by 27 shots, Graham Rowbottom beat Ebro Jesenkovic by 10 shots and John McKibben won by six shots over Mark Kaye.
