Glass thrower spared jail term

A SANDY Bay man has been handed a three-month suspended sentence and 120 hours of community service after he drunkenly threw a glass that hit another man in the head.

James Anthony Hortle, 25, was yesterday sentenced in the Supreme Court in Hobart after a jury found wounding.

The court heard Hortle threw a glass in the direction of the victim after a long night of drinking at a bar on Salamanca Place on September 30, 2017.

Justice Gregory Geason said the man suffered a cut to the right side of his head and earlobe as a result of Hortle’s “reckless” actions. him guilty of

“Your conduct is an example of the stupid and dangerous behaviour that can follow excessive alcohol consumptio­n,” Justice Geason said.

“Your actions were unprovoked and wholly unacceptab­le.

“It is through good fortune and nothing else that the injuries sustained by your victim were not serious.”

The court heard Hortle had refrained from drinking alcohol since the incident.

Justice Geason told the court Hortle had no prior conviction­s and the conduct had been “out of character”, saying he hoped Hortle had learnt a lesson.

Hortle must not commit another offence punishable by imprisonme­nt for two years.
