McMahon excited to be stepping up coaching duties

- REBECCA WILLIAMS

NETBALL great Sharelle McMahon will take a move towards a future head coaching role when she steps up as an assistant to Simone McKinnis at the Melbourne Vixens next year.

The former Australian captain has worked as a parttime specialist coach with the Vixens for the past five years, supporting the team’s shooters.

But McMahon will now replace McKinnis’s long-time assistant coach Di Honey, who is taking over as coach of feeder team Victorian Fury in the ANL.

“I’ve been in the coaching group since I retired from playing so I’ve been involved for quite a few years now, so the bigger role is something that I’m excited about,’’ McMahon said. “I’ve always been passionate about the high performance side of sport and this is a great opportunity for me to get my teeth stuck into that side of things a bit more.

“Coaching for me has always been something that I have been really excited about, working directly with athletes.

“It’s the first move into that high performance space and we’ll see what happens after that.’’

Regarded one of Australia’s greatest netballers, McMahon retired at the end of 2013, with the Vixens’ annual MVP award now named after her.
