Day to remember with pride

- JACK PAYNTER

FOR Glenorchy RSL vice president Jason Spurr military life runs in the family.

His grandfather served in World War II, his dad in Malaya during the Vietnam War and his uncle was a member of the Australian air force.

Mr Spurr and his brother also served in East Timor at the same time during the 1999 conflict.

He said he had been inspired by his family and would be proudly wearing his service medals on his chest during Sunday’s Remembrance Day commemorations.

Glenorchy RSL will be holding a service at their sub branch in Main Rd where they would also play music sourced from the World War I period. Mr Spurr is also collecting the Anzac Spirit coins with his nieces and nephews and said it was a good opportunity to help young people learn about the Anzacs and keep their stories alive.

As the Armistice centenary approaches, News Corp, owner of the Mercury, is commemorating the strength and spirit of the Anzacs with a limited- edition 15-day coin collection. The collection, developed in partnership with Westpac, Legacy and the Royal Australian Mint, is inspired by the human qualities immortalised in the Australian War Memorial’s Hall of Memory. Every day a different coin is released and can be bought for $3 with your Mercury.
