Mercury (Hobart)

Honoured and never forgotten

-

EXACTLY 100 years ago on Sunday, the guns fell silent on the bloodiest conflict in human history — World War I, the war that was supposed to end them all.

Today and over this weekend, the Mercury and Sunday Tasmanian will mark this historic centenary with a series of special liftouts and features.

Inside today you will find a special commemorative liftout featuring accounts and historic photos of how Tasmania celebrated the end of the war, such as this image of a victory march outside the Town Hall. And on Pages 10-11 there is also a list of every memorial service in the state this weekend.

Tomorrow we reprint the historic newspaper account of the Armistice — plus there is a special poster listing the names of every Tasmanian who gave their life in the war. And in the Sunday Tasmanian is a collector’s edition, 40-page magazine featuring the stories of 100 of Tasmania’s everyday heroes from that conflict. We do this all so Tasmania never forgets.
