Dancing in the streets

- HELEN KEMPTON

THE Lenah Valley community will host a street party today to celebrate the suburb’s makeover.

The event will run from 11am to 1pm and marks the completion of the streetscape project in the Lenah Valley retail precinct — a collaboration between the Lenah Valley community, artist Alex Miles and the City of Hobart.

Activities will take place in Augusta Rd and at St Giles.

Entertainment will include live jazz courtesy of the Van Diamond Band, food vans and children’s activities such as face painting, storytelling and a petting zoo.

Nala Mansell will conduct a Welcome to Country at 12pm followed by an official opening by Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds.

The streetscape upgrades include new paving on the southern side, trees and plants, new seating, new bus shelters, new lighting and public art.

“The upgrade not only activates the precinct but recognises the stories and people who have formed the fabric of the Lenah Valley community as it is today,” Hobart City Council said.

“Miles’s artwork, ranging from painted murals to words featured on street furniture and bus shelters, reflect the richness of life in ‘the Valley’, past and present.”

Greenway Ave at the intersection with Augusta Rd will be closed to traffic from 9am-2pm.

Augusta Rd will be open to traffic with crossing guards stationed near Greenway Ave to help pedestrians cross safely.
