Mousey runs out of luck in fight

-

TASMANIAN Krystina “Mousey” Jacobs lost her women’s featherweight slugfest last night, which was part of the Jeff Horn versus Anthony Mundine undercard at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

Brisbane’s Papua New Guineaborn featherweight Kori Farr won a split decision over Jacobs (left).

Jacobs, 23, is the first female professional boxer to come out of Tasmania. Before turning pro, she won five Australian Amateur Boxing League titles.

Also on the undercard last night, Horn’s younger brother Ben was sensationally stopped in his professional debut by rugged Townsville scrapper Lachlan O’Shea.

Referee Paul Tapley called a halt to the fight 38 seconds into the fourth round as southpaw O’Shea knocked Horn’s mouthguard flying with a wild right hand and had him trapped helpless on the ropes.

It was a wild, windmilling fight and despite a pep talk from his brother before the fight, Ben, 29, couldn’t hold off the livewire underdog.

Ben had Horn’s trainer Glenn Rushton and his corner team of cutman Stephen Edwards and Adam Copland in his corner. But they couldn’t help him as O’Shea cut loose and Ben lost his equilibrium.

The Townsville boxer had worldrated cruiserweight bruiser Mark Flanagan and veteran coach Dennis Clancy in the his corner and while Ben Horn went into the bout with 16 amateur fights behind him his defence had huge gaps for O’Shea’s counters.

It was the pro debut for both fighters.

O’Shea said he was nervous going into the fight but knew he had nothing to lose. While he believed the Horn camp saw him as a lamb to the slaughter, he turned out to a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Ben and Jeff Horn sparred many rounds in the lead-up to the fight.

The main event between Jeff Horn and Mundine had not been decided at the time of publication.
