TWO people have died and several others have been injured after a horror 24 hours on the state’s roads.

A 27-year-old Hobart motorcyclist died after he lost control and crashed into a wire barrier on the Midland Highway at Brighton about 10.30pm on Thursday night.

Senior Sergeant Rebecca Davis said members of the public had tried to help the rider but she would not comment on whether he died at the scene.

The northbound lanes of the highway between the turnoff to Glenstone Rd and Brighton Rd were closed until 4am while police investigated. The cause of the crash was not known last night.

Yesterday morning, an- other man was killed after crossing onto the incorrect side of the road and hitting an embankment at Underwood, northeast of Launceston.

The 65-year-old man, of Lalla, was travelling south on Lilydale Rd about 5.25am when he lost control of his red Suzuki Swift.

Tasmania Police, Tasmania Fire Service and Ambulance Tasmania were called to the crash but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crash Investigation and Forensic Services attended, with early indications suggesting excessive speed was a factor in the crash.

Investigators are seeking information and dashcam footage from anyone who may have seen the car or motorcyclist and/or witnessed either of the fatal crashes.

Police and emergency services also responded to a five-car crash on the Arthur Highway at Forcett about 1pm yesterday. No one was seriously hurt in the crash but several people received minor injuries.

The highway remained closed between Sugarloaf Rd and Old Forcett Rd for hours, with motorists asked to divert through Carlton or Dodges Ferry.

Just an hour later there was a single-vehicle crash on the Lyell Highway. There were no serious injuries reported but the left lane heading towards Queenstown was blocked while the scene was cleared.
