New raptor deal takes flight

- JIM ALOUAT

WORKERS from Tastex Knitwear have delivered 30 “enviorwoolly” soft toy owls to Raptor Refuge to mark International Day of People with Disability.

Tastex Knitwear employs 18 staff with disabilities who worked tirelessly to produce the owls made from recycled wool.

Tastex Knitwear executive officer Vicki Hawker said the staff had an incredible day at the refuge yesterday.

“They were amazed and enjoyed the visit,” she said.

“To have been involved in the production of the owls gave them a great sense of satisfaction.”

Raptor Refuge founder Craig Webb said Tastex, which makes the uniform for Raptor Refuge staff, approached him about creating the owls.

“The focus is that the disabled community can get out and interact in everyday life,” he said.

The masked owls will be sold at the Raptor Refuge at Kettering and help support its activities.

The release of the toys coincides with the recent launch of a new hotline number for the refuge to help stop the deaths of eagles and other raptors across the state.

“If people see a dead or injured raptor please call 1800 728 867,” Mr Webb said.

Ms Hawker said Tasmanians could support her non-profit organisation by visiting www.devilknits.com.au and buying some of its environmentally friendly knitwear or visiting the Glenorchy shopfront at 12 Mill Lane.
