Aussie rock veterans’ Tassie gig

- SHAUN McMANUS

SPIDERBAIT’S Kram says he can’t wait to return to Tasmania after his band was revealed as one of three renowned Australian rock groups set to headline Day on the Lawn in Hobart next year.

Spiderbait will perform alongside Birds of Tokyo and The Smith Street Band when the festival returns to the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens for the third year in March.

The line-up will also include the likes of Little May, The Beths, and Kyle Lionhart, along with local favourites Robotikus, Lazer Baby, and Empire Park.

The all-ages event will feature local craft beers, a selection of Tasmanian wines, and food trucks, as well as a childfriendly play area.

The three founding members of Spiderbait have been bashing out their idiosyncratic thrash-pop tunes for the best part of three decades.

Drummer and singer Kram told the Mercury the band loves playing in Tasmania.

“We’re looking forward to coming back and playing again, it should be awesome,” Kram said.

He said Day on the Lawn attendees could expect a “spontaneous” show from Spiderbait.

“I never have been interested in having everything worked out so much that you can almost see what the show is going to be like before you play it — I don’t really see the point of that,” he said.

Birds of Tokyo have grown from independent roots to become one of Australia’s most popular contemporary rock bands, producing hits such as Plans, Lanterns, and This Fire along the way.

Melbourne folk-punks The Smith Street Band have won a legion of fans around the world thanks to songs such as Surrender, Young Drunk, Death to the Lads, Birthdays and Passiona.

Day on the Lawn will be held at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens on Saturday, March 23.

General admission tickets are $89 plus booking fee. Tickets are available online from oztix.com.au from 8am on Thursday.
