Carrick big day out for Duggan

- PETER STAPLES

TASMANIAN Hall of Fame driver Ricky Duggan had a day out at Carrick on Sunday, booting home four winners and a second on the seven-race card.

Duggan drove the winners of the first three races before finishing second aboard Adele Said in the fourth event.

He had to wait until the last race to find his fourth winner, Miss Superbia.

His first winner was outsider Forever Ours ($17.90), trained by his brother Adrian, which produced a powerful finishing burst from well back in the field to score comfortably over race leader Harshali.

Duggan gave short-price favourite Still Hungover ($1.50) the run of the race in the one-out-one-back position to go on and score an effortless win in a 3C0-3C1 for Brighton trainer Rodney Ashwood.

Duggan earnt his driving fee aboard Ima Ginger Rogers ($4.80) which ground out a last-stride win over the favourite Streetside Classic ($2.50) after starting off 20m.

Ima Ginger Rogers was under strong driving from Duggan 600m from home and it took all of his energy and ability to secure his third win of the day.

His fourth win, aboard Miss Superbia, gave trainer Rod Ashwood a double.

Miss Superbia ($10.20) showed good gate speed to lead from the front row and had enough in reserve to hold out the fast finish of race favourite Twenty Two Karat ($3.60) which flashed home after being held up nearing the home turn.

Most punters thought Laredo Torpedo ($2.10 fav) looked to be Duggan’s best winning chance, but the Juanita McKenzie-trained gelding gal- loped away from the standing start and refused to get back into his gait and Duggan had no option but to retire him from the race.

Laredo Torpedo won four in succession before galloping at the start of a mobile event in Hobart prior to doing the same thing from the stand at Carrick.

McKenzie intended aiming Laredo Torpedo at some of the country cups but those plans are in jeopardy if the gelding can’t mend his manners at the start.

While Duggan’s four winners took his season tally to 17, he remains second in the race for the driver’s premiership behind Mark Yole who dominated at Burnie last Friday by driving a treble on the sevenrace card to take his season tally to 22.

Yole’s winners were Northview Dave ($10) in a C1 or better standing start event over 2180 metres; Rocknrollhigh- light ($12.50) in a C3 or better over 2500m and Iam Aw Sam ($2.50fav) in a C2 or better (1892m) with all three winners trained by his brother Ben Yole.

Ben has won the past three trainer’s premierships and he is well on the way to snaring his fourth with last Friday night’s treble taking his win tally to 38 to be well on target to better his record of 124 winners, which he has achieved for the past two seasons.
