I look at bigger picture
I FIT into Simon Bevilacqua’s definition of the underclass of poor people ( Mercury, December 1). I take as a personal insult his belief people like me don’t care about the welfare of asylum seekers, gay rights, transgender birth certificates, climate change or environment sustainability. None of these are trivial or inconsequential to me. I can and do look outside my own worries at the bigger picture and care greatly. Don’t you dare underestimate people like me.
Bruny ferry can’t cope
THANKS Mr Hodgman. The Bruny Island ferry service is the worst my family has seen in the 60 years we have been using it. Where else do you find a business closing for an hour every day for lunch. Cars at Roberts Point back for kilometres and it’s only the second day of summer. They can’t cope now. What are they going to be like in a couple of weeks. It’s gone back to the old hours and hours of waiting when it was Kettering to Barnes Bay.
Magical musical evening
I CANNOT believe there has been no coverage of the Combined Primary Schools Bands and Choirs Annual Concert performed on Friday. Oh my! What a magical evening! The end result of a year’s worth of grade 5 and 6 students learning instruments, young singers and dedicated teachers practising for many hours culminating in the most wondrous concert at the DEC. A huge thank you to the students, amazing teachers, all involved in
Still impressed
JUST to let friends know, I am not a poet and I did not spend my childhood in Hong Kong (under Japanese occupation I’m sure it would have been less enjoyable than my real childhood in “Doodlebug Alley”, Kent, UK). The first part of my letter on Saturday regarding the student climate change rally was an unfortunate editorial error. But may I say again how impressed I was by the children’s action. The cause was just. The speakers articulate. The experience I’m sure benefited their understanding of our democracy. Far from condemning teachers’ influence I would congratulate the education system, private and public, for endowing our children with a sense of social responsibility.
Developing talent
BRING on our stand-alone AFL team. We need our young people to know they can live here, developing all their talents. We have outstanding sportspeople to act as coaches and mentors and excellent sporting arenas including Blundstone Arena and University of Tasmania Stadium. As well as our Sheffield Shield team, Tasmania needs its own AFL team.
